Lake View Presbyterian Church Music
Music at Lake View is a driving force behind each of our worship services. Many musical styles offer variety in our service with contributions from Adult and Children's Choirs, jazz and contemporary music, solos and instrumental pieces.
The Adult Choir at LVPC sings every Sunday and at special services throughout the year, except during the summer. The choir sings a wide variety of choral music, ranging from baroque, classical and English-style anthems all the way to spirituals and traditional gospel. Choir rehearsal is at 7:15 every Wednesday night and at 10:00 every Sunday morning. The organ was built by the Lyon and Healy Company of Chicago, and later altered by the N. Doerr Organ Company. It is located in a chamber at the front of the nave, with a lower wood case and upper faηade of pipes (most of the faηade pipes are functional a few of the faηade pipes are non-speaking, used only to maintain pipe layout/visual symmetry). During the sanctuary renovation, the original design etched on the pipes was uncovered and repainted.
Originally, the Lyon and Healy console was attached to the center of the organ case. The Doerr console was detached and placed at the center of the choir loft. The console now sits to the left slightly behind a four foot wooden screen. The original action was probably tubular pneumatic. The current action is electro-pneumatic. The blower is placed in a lower level chamber to the right and below the main organ chamber. The organ fell into disrepair and went unplayed for over 10 years. When the sanctuary was renovated in 1999 2000, the church made a commitment to restoring and using the instrument. Some of the problems included:
The renovation was a long process. The pipes were removed, cleaned, and repainted. The chamber was cleaned, re-plastered and painted. The bellows were re-leathered, the winding system was cleaned and repaired, the console was replaced, and all of the wiring was replaced as well. The renovated organ was first heard during the Advent season in 2001. It was formally dedicated during a special service on September 15, 2002.
